Anonymous code enforcement complaints

1:05:28Okay, the uh next issue also part of the uh FAC agenda. Um you'll remember back in 21 the law was changed, but before 2021, code enforcement complaints could be made by residents anonymously. Uh now it requires them to put their name in. We try to go around that uh when the bill was created and allow the residents to call their county commissioner so they could put that in. Um we

1:05:58we did that uh uh we have been doing that uh a lot, but Just not enough manpower to go around the county. So it would be good if we can get that back in and repeal that law. Uh you'll remember this is uh snitches get stitches law that passed in twenty uh one. Um

1:06:20We actually had a resident. You had a resident. I think this is something near and dear to you, but we had a resident that was uh attacked. Yes

1:06:26by his name. He had a house that had drug dealing and other things going on next to him and called it in and they beat him up and he got his his face was all cut up and was in the hospital and stitches all over his face. Um so when we brought this up at FAC Every county came forward with horror stories. of of uh what's going on when when um you make some of these calls and and the the person comes in and does something to their property or to

I do think there there needs to be some kind of guardrails because I know I think the reason it switched when we had a legislator from South Florida was that s some people use it um a as a way to antagonize a neighbor or something. So You know, maybe so many calls on one address. Um I'm sure code enforcement could or someone could come up with the right guardrails, but there does need to be guardrails, but we we have a a lot of citizens who are now afraid to call in

1:07:26and um it's really impacted a lot of neighborhoods across the state.

1:07:30Like a lot of things that happen in the legislature, uh actions that occur in Miami Dade, Brower County, Long Beach County, uh affect all of us statewide because Rebuilt the ro wall in the wrong part of the United States and um should be should be that part.

1:07:47We need South Florida Blaws and the rest of the same Florida.

1:07:53I would be shocked if we changed it back to anonymous but guardrails. Maybe our consideration. And I'm assuming Bay is looking for some sponsor.

1:08:16So the the association has also talked about proposing a guardrail to keep it private for twelve months and then releasing it. One, you know that you uh made that call, that that information would be available in twelve months, so that could be a guardrail they could consider.

1:08:31Yeah, something may work. is to allow an HOA to put a complaint and that's what we used to do a lot. That worked very well. Because now it doesn't attach even a person, but it knows a group that's going out there. Sometimes we don't have HOAs but we have other citizen groups that are there offici official in in like Crime Watch, et cetera, they can see it as well. But any anything to get it reported where someone doesn't get that retribution. I and I've got a couple where people got beat up really bad. Yeah

1:09:01it's like Putting neighbor against neighbor just doesn't build good relations anyway. But The the bottom line is if the police can take an arm complaint, why can't we have code of course we do the same thing?

1:09:15I I'm I'm talking unanimous support from all the counties that pass.

1:09:19Uh Commissioner when you say like an HOA would put the complaint, so if somebody looked it up they would just see H O A H O A

1:09:24exactly complaint. But you know, for me m a lot of my district on holiday there there are no HOAs. Um and we're working so hard to clean that up and this has been a real step backwards for those kind of neighborhoods.

1:09:41That's what's that's why I say cr Crime Watch Group. Like Nancy Bonita's Gulf Islands very organized, they meet once a month. They they could do it as well the same way.

1:09:49And there's areas in every county including this one where code enforcement is an ongoing Daily right. Yes, what it is, yeah.

1:10:06So I I I think it's a valid valid consideration.
