Homeless camp on US 19

What the county recorded

This item is not from the published agenda

It is a stretch of the recording that this archive identified as a separate matter — a call to order, a recess, or something taken up that the agenda does not list. There is no official title, no staff recommendation and no disposition, because the county never recorded one. Everything below is inferred.

Um I wanna show you some pictures of um what I'm seeing. This is a little challenge. So this is a group. This is this is Trouble Creek in nineteen. And I don't know if they they you they were there, Commissioner, when you were there. Um they're living pretty much living on this corner and sometimes they're on this side of the road, which is the um Walgreens, and sometimes they're on the other side of the bushes, And um on our property right away. Uh

not it's really frustrating because

There's really nothing. It's just a situation that we're having we're not cleaning up. I have drive I drive this all the time. I see them laying up laying their drinking on our property on our right-of-way and they're taking turns. going up to the cars, At the light. They're just rotating and um if you have more pictures, a lot of them Seem to be living behind there in this little piece of property behind the Walgreens and the Bank

of America. Um I happened to be filming there one day when um a a woman and a man started walking in there. I'm like, no, no, no, because very clearly it says, no trespassing, no dumping. Um And she told me uh that this is a major hangout for Young drug users. uh teenage drug users with HIV and it she tries to clean it up when she's not in jail. That's what she told me. Um but We have

not cleaned this up yet. It's been like this for weeks now. Keep keep moving on the pictures. There's theirs is no trespassing sign. Um We're trying to find the owner so we can get this cleaned up. I the guy bought this off for tax receipts and and the video, please?

I I'm just so frustrated that that uh this keeps happening over and over. And Commissioner Mariano, you've got it in your district. But it's just so frustrating when they're living out right on nineteen. Um look at look look at this. So there's the Bank of America. That's where the PEDC Smart Starts program is. And um This is the road. It's our it's our road. Um It's not good resolution. Sorry. I've seen it.

But it's a mess. It it

Um, I'm not showing you landscape pictures today. I'm showing you our challenges. Um Of our homeless living out on the on the street.

Fitzpatrick

Yeah. So I've actually stopped and spoken to a few of the homeless and what their response to me is they've been on the wait list for a year now. So what kind of resolution are we coming up with? for our homeless population.

StarkeyChair

Well we have our nineteen task force um leader over there with Kelly Miller. So we're gonna be

Fitzpatrick

She's working on that.

StarkeyChair

And um

Fitzpatrick

and I've been working very talking with

StarkeyChair

the sheriff and and our staff. Um And it's too much to get into now, but we'll probably have a workshop on su on some of some of the ideas as this year goes by. But Um It's just frustrating to me that our hands are tied. And I I just think that we need to ask the state of Florida or someone to repeal or appeal the is it the second court of appeals? ruling that we can't stop solicitation. I I just don't think we

should stop. We need to move that. Take that to the next court. Um And and We shouldn't be able to let that happen. So that's kinda it for me. I thought we were gonna pull leisure your appointments. Oh yeah, my appointments. Oh yeah, do you have one more? I thought we were gonna talk maybe about leisure lane today, but since we since we didn't, we'll talk about it at a minute. I'll be real

Oakley

quick. Go

ahead.
